I released a ridiculously small image viewer for the Mac
2026-09-10
Macview is out.
Everything below this is just me rambling.
I cannot stand the image viewer that ships with the Mac.
Nothing about it feels intuitive, and coming from Windows at the time, I found it genuinely hard to live with.
So I went looking, found an app called qView, and used it for years.
qView is a good app. It handles perfectly well, and it looks sharp too.
Wanting anything more out of an image viewer is probably the weirder position to take, so for a long time I had nothing real to complain about.
But little things did start piling up.
- Launch is just slightly slow, and it looks like that is baked into how it is built
- The app itself is over 120MB, which is not small
- It preloads the next and previous files, which gets heavy on a cloud drive because it pulls down images you never look at
- The name never sat right with me — lower camel, come on…
So I built my own.
Claude Code wrote all of it. Smart thing.
The latest version right now is 0.3.3. The app is 1.6MB, launch is noticeably faster, and I am happy with it.
The trade-off is that it does very little. There may not even be a rough edge for it to smooth over.
That is the balance to keep an eye on, so I plan to keep moving carefully from here.
